.NET Micro Framework open sourced under Apache 2.0 license

Hi folks,

good news for all people interested in .NET Micro Framework. It's moving forward again.
It's all over town already - but now it's official.

Microsoft to Open Source the .NET Micro Framework

Concerning Peter Galli (Open Source Community Manager for Microsoft's Platform Strategy Group) it was announced yesterday on the PDC that .NET Micro Framework will be available under under Apache 2.0 license. Unfortunately the source for the Cryptography library and the TCP/IP stack will not be disclosed.
Let's see how Microsoft will support the community in future.

.NET Micro Framework 4.0 pre-release for select partners

Hi folks,

development of the .NET Micro Framework is moving forward as Microsoft has just sent out the pre-release of 4.0 to select hardware partners to give them a headstart before the official Beta is released to a broader audience, next month. The final release is currently planned for autumn.

As a reminder here is a short overview of the new features in 4.0:

• performance improvements in the graphics
• multi-touch
• native HTTP and HTTPS
• watchdog support
• power management support
• and much more

Microsoft starts to open .NET Micro Framework

Microsoft has already announced that with the next release of the .NET Micro Framework, the product will be moving to an open model. In the meantime Microsoft is now offering the porting kit as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center here.

Note:

• a Service Pack is also available for the 3.0 porting kit which has to be installed ontop. You can downlad it from here
  
• this is still a time-bombed version - this has already been removed from the upcoming version

Lorenzo, Developer Manger, has confirmed plans to involve the community and to give the source code of the runtime, object model and the drivers to the community. However the exact process still has to be defined.

A very interesting point is the fact that the team is looking into the possibility to use the code base without having to contribute any development back to the community - thus allowing protection of IP. From my point of view a necessary pre-requisite for the .NET Micro Framework to become a success.

IPV6 and .NET Micro Framework

Colin Miller from Microsoft is asking the community about possible needs of IPV6 support in the future releases of .NET Micro Framework.

.NET Micro Framework moves to Developer Devision

The .NET Micro Framework Team has posted some interesting news on their blog with regard to the current rumors around .NET MF.

The .NET Micro Framework Team is moving into the Developer Devision and is additionally thinking about new business models including a larger engagement of the community; however Microsoft will carry on providing initial guidance and the necessary tools - from my point of view a necessary prequisite if the .NET Micro Framework is still to be a success.

Stay tuned as the exact business model is to be defined in the near future.

.NET Micro Framework code to be given to the community?

Rumor, has it that Microsoft is planning to give the source code for the .NET Micro Framework to the community and shall be withdrawing from this business. As for the financial business model it is said that royalties will be terminated and the porting kit will be made available free of charge.

Microsoft will however carry on supporting existing customers as well as hold on to their lifecycle support pledge. New customers, wanting to sport their devices with the .NET Micro Framework are then to be supported by the community.

The question is (if the rumor is true): Are we looking at the beginning of the end of the .NET Micro Framework or will this blow new life in to it? And I guess only the exisiting community around the .NET Micro Framework can give the answer to this.

.NET Micro Framework under water

If you're in the catering business and visiting the GAST Exhibition in Salzburg this week, you will see the AMI drink dispenser, from AUG Elektronik running "under water".

The demo, which you can also watch on YouTube, demonstrates that the dispenser can still be run while liquid is running over the top of it.

The AMI drink dispenser is using ATMELs QMatrix technology.

ATMEL will also be displaying the AMI DevKit with the QMatrix glass front at the ESC Silicon Valley 2009.

Another Demo of Tetris on .NET Microframework

And here is our first video on this blog. Sorry about the quality, I had to nick my daughters "pink" digi cam.

Andreas had already "u-tubed" his Tetris Demo running on the AMI Dev Kit and in the past I had written about SPOT Watches ... and do you remember back in the old days when we used to run around with Casio watches playing Pac-Man?

Well then have a look at this video with Tetris running on a SPOT Watch.

DevKit for the .NET Micro Framework 3.0 available

The guys from AUG Elektronik in Austria have just started delivering their AMI DevKit for the .NET Micro Framework 3.0. They've done a really good job and you really get your money's worth. The Kit comes in a ESD-Box along with power supply, cables and a USB-stick containing documentation and installation files.

Have a look at the benchmarking they did using Pavel Bansky's Tetris.

Using Interop in the .NET Micro Framework V3.0

Hello guys,

there is a quite interresting article about using Interop in the .NET Micro Framework V3.0.

The .NET Micro framework provides a rich level of support for embedded systems development from handling interrupts on GPIO pins to talking to hardware on an SPI or I2C bus. Unfortunately, sometimes, that’s not quite enough. For example, an A/D converter built into the chip that is memory mapped to the processor core is unreachable by managed code in V2.5 and earlier. For this, and many other reasons, the .NET Micro Framework V3.0 Porting Kit supports extending the .NET run time libraries with custom interop code to call into native (C/C++) code.

.NET Micro Framework Porting Kit 3.0 - Where to get it.

Ok, as I have been asked more than just once, here is a short update on where to get the Porting Kit from.

As you will have noticed, the link on the .NET Micro Framework site has not yet been activated.

So what to do? Well if you're a US resident, simply visit the Microsoft store here: http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/-NET-Micro-Framework/product/667DC827

If you're living in europe the porting kit will be offered from December onwards at the UK store.
